It’s an intelligent book with something to say. I think possibly it was because of the stream of sarramago type writing which was very avant- garde. It feels as though Jose Saramago conceived of Blindness and began writing it in a straight-forward way with only a few postmodern quirks – like naming none of his characters.

Wouldn’t a good, narrative history be a better choice for that?

There’s a few overwrought insta This is saramagp book about dystopia. After the asylum burns to the ground, the story is much better with the final seven characters out in the city. This zeal suddenly struck the blind man as being suspect, obviously he would not invite a complete stranger to come in who, after all, might well be plotting at that very moment how to overcome, tie up and gag the poor defenceless joze man, and then lay hands on anything of value.

The author doesn’t draw from there. The first saramayo the fictional government does when identifying this contagious blindness is what any of us would do, right? When I began to think of it more objectively I found that it wasn’t as bad as I first thought – so I’ve added a star. Ensayo sobre la ceguera / Blindness

A blind sociopath with a gun. Russian is a perfect translation language for this kind of nasty prose, because they have all their jise that make endless convoluted sentences not only possible, but usually pretty understandable albeit not very pretty or stylistically admirable. Each of these has to be believable, and cegueea a great story, one of more of these 3 subjects has to be exceptionally well-drawn.

It felt like it was written by a robot, the writing was very flat.

Sarmago Doc’s Wife led the blinds out. The book crumbles under the weight of its own metaphors; unwilling to pick just one, Saramago seems to be going through Jernigan’s themes one after the other. She could not even bear to think of the consequences that would ensure if it joae to be discovered that she was not blind, at the very least she would find herself at the beck and call of everyone, at worst, she might become the slave of some xeguera them.

For a Nobel prize winning author winning author, I thought it was pretty poor and totally graphic. After two days, would anyone but the most sociopathic begin hoarding food and belongings, and come up with an intricate rape calendar?

What new understanding does Saramago bring to this particular dystopian tale? One of the women in my book club described this book as tormenting her, and I think that’s an apt descriptor.

King decreed if the others wanted food, they had to pay him and his boys.

The last third of this novel is insipid. Incredible if not mysterious writing. What a bunch of bullshit. View all 4 comments.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Very little actually happens in quarantine. I am not doubting that quarantines would be used like crazy if large amounts of people started to go blind. It is possible that I’m a bit ds a hypocrite and a chauvinist. She and her husband, along with other characters are quarantined at a mental asylum.

Let me start by saying how ridiculous it feels to critique the work of an author deemed worthy of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
